The Anthropomorphization Ritual

02/2024, LungA LAND Program, Iceland

The Anthropomorphization Ritual isexploring the inability of humans to empathize with anything that lacks recognizable ‘human’ emotions and/or responses. Capturing the absurdity of the anthropocentric desire to attribute human-like faces, features, and emotions to the non-human by entering an oath engaging this fantasy, the project plays with this emerging conflict.

The project came to be during a week long workshop about speculative storytelling led by Garðar Eyjólfsson.

With performing the written oath the protagonist takes the conscious perspective of the  self centered charlatan, the saviour of all, which is human kind. Facing a non-human entity, the actor now can give everything and everyone human attributes, making them essentially human. In the process of anthropomorphization the two -now- humans encounter several difficulties due to their difference in physical form.

How can a mountain hold their playing cards or drink a fancy glas of tea?

No worries, the human is enough human for all of earth.
The mountain is named H. Montanna, the table and chairs are brought and Montanna has a rather frosty attitude at the dinner party.

Further iterations of this project where postponed, because Weather was not in the mood to join a bikini dance performance at the beach.
